Flying The Flag - March 29, 2010

Like most people, I spend more than my fair share of time on Facebook. I’m a little disturbed by the amount of people that are
using the picture of an upside down American Flag for their profile picture.

The upside down flag represents extreme distress. According to the United States Flag Code, Section 176 (a) The flag should
never be displayed with the union down (blue field with stars is called the union), except as a signal of dire distress in instances
of extreme danger to life or property.

While I can understand why people are doing this, as a veteran, I personally think it is very disrespectful. The history behind the
flag being flown upside down was so that if a fort or ship had been taken over by the enemy, approaching troops and ships
would know to approach with caution.

The United States is certainly going through a unique and trying timer in her history. More people than ever are actively engaged
in the political process and that’s a good thing. I just ask that you give some consideration to what you are doing to show your
angst towards our current administration.

I am as displeased as anybody with what is happening to our country right now. When I speak with my fellow veterans, almost
to a man they say, “I didn't fight a war to see this happen to my country.”

Perhaps the flag is just a symbol but to those of us who have served our country it is more than that. We have put our lives on
the line and witnessed our brothers in arms make the ultimate sacrifice to defend that symbol and all it stands for. To see the flag
treated with disrespect is no different than when Hamas or some ultra liberal group burns our flag.

So keep putting your views out there but show some respect for those that defended your right to do so.

God Bless,

Todd
